So far, through two games, Darnold has looked better as a Panther, with Carolina's supporting cast and coaching staff providing a boon to his career revitalization.But the Jets raised some eyebrows this offseason when they traded Darnold to the Panthers. Opting to select QB Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a single question remained: Why?There's no one answer.MORE: Why did the Jets trade Sam Darnold?There are three main reasons why the Jets moved on from Sam Darnold after just three years in Florham Park:RegimeArguably the most important bit of the equation that resulted in Darnold being shipped to the Panthers: He's not anybody's guy.Darnold, drafted No. 3 overall in 2018, was selected by then-GM Mike Maccagnan, pairing him with head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles was canned following the 2018 season and was replaced by Adam Gase, andMaccagnan was ousted following the 2019 NFL Draft and replaced by current GM Joe Douglas.Douglas and Gase worked alongside each other for the 2019 and 2020seasons, after which Gase was fired and replaced with Douglas' head coach pick, Robert Saleh. Among quarterbacks who have started at least 30 games since 2018 (22 total), Darnold ranks last in: Interception rate (3.2), pa ser rating (78.6), completion percentage (59.8) and yards per attempt (6.64). The rest of Darnold's stats weren't particularly encouraging, either: His 45 pa sing TDs were second worst, along with yards per game (213.1).Everything in context, of course: The Jets had a pretty bad group of skill position players, and with Christian McCaffrey, Robby Anderson andDJ Moore, he may have the best supporting cast (and most stable coaching situation) he's had since entering the league in 2018.If Darnold can kick the turnover problems, exorcise the ghosts and turn those "flashes" into Austen Williams Jersey sustained succe s, the Panthers may have found themselves a steal.
